What’s a Polymath and am I one?

August 26, 2022

Do you have a thirst for learning?

Do you devour new concepts and get excited about your fantastic new business ideas?

Have you ever struggled with the ‘What do you do?’ question at business events because actually, in a world of specialists, you are an eclectic mix of creativity and interests who wants to be know everything?

  • Do you have many interests that you are passionate about but don’t know how to apply them to your work?
  • Do you bore easily doing the same thing every day, or after a few years when you’ve learnt all you need?
  • Are you nervous about creating your dream business if you turn out to not be ‘good enough?

(Let’s get real here. It’s not like there are lots of resources out there for ‘plate spinners like us).

  • Do you feel intuitive that being forced to ‘find your niche is stopping you from making an impact on the work that you want to do?
  • Do you wish you had more time for yourself or energy for your family?
  • Do you lack confidence in your life and business, your vision?
  • Are you spinning too many plates at once?

If the whole world seems to be telling you to ‘Find Your Niche’, where do you go for care and support when you have MANY NICHES?

How do you draw all your interests together to create a fabulous, sustainable, dream career (life) and make a living while doing EVERYTHING you love?

A great way to do this is by getting some coaching, learning to prioritise, and becoming adept and managing your many projects and interests.  It took me a long time to forgive myself for ‘flitting’ from one passion to the next.  But now I have found a career that can absorb most of my interests and the rest are now happy hobbies that I can pick up or drop whenever I want.

Pros and cons of being a polymath:

pros;

quick learner, good collaborator, problem solver, ideas synthesis, creative, big picture thinkers, unafraid to try new things, unafraid to ‘start all over again’, learn from failing, passionate, bursting with ideas, flexible, incredible knowledge can blend fields.

CONS:

sometimes un-academic, bored easily, sometimes disorganised, misunderstood in society, imposter syndrome, social anxiety, overwhelm, poor sense of self, forgetful, procrastinator
