It can be really difficult when you’re running your own business to decide how much to charge and the temptation can be to look at what everybody else is charging and put yourself somewhere around that, but the mistake here would be that you will end up just looking and being priced as same as everybody else. Then how are you going to compete? The only option you will have will be to drop your price, hen you may not make enough money to live and nobody wants that!

So there’s many things that can go into making sure that you do a good ‘costing exercise’ This can sound really frightening, especially of numbers ‘isn’t your thing’. One of the things I would like to give you is a list of some things that you can bear in mind when deciding how much to charge. You will have to cover these expenses too!
- Web hosting
- Use of home
- Mileage
- Domain names
- Photo editing software
- Video editing software
- Telephones
- Venue hire
- Parking
- Internet security and antivirus
- Email software such as MailChimp
- Bank charges
- Stationery and business cards
- Other stationery such as printer paper and ink
- Postage
- Equipment and it’s maintenance such as your computer
- Training that you will need to continue doing
- Allowance for tax and national insurance payments
- Website subscriptions such as plugins and membership sites
- Dropbox Google Drive or other such cloud services
- Business insurance
- Equipment insurance
- Advertising
- Marketing materials
- Marketing help or other outsourcing
- And ‘J I C’ which stands for ‘just in case’. This is a small payment that I put aside regularly for emergencies and I factor it into my bookkeeping.
Sometimes these things won’t be relevant to you or your business, and some of them will.
